It is still a little cold at night and in the morning  but spring is right around the corner. Recently, daytime temperatures have been warming up just as we have been closing out the year.  Spring is upon us.

In March many English speaking countries of the world celebrate a holiday called St. Patrick’s Day. Today I want to talk a little bit about what this holiday was like when I was in Elementary school. I can only speak for America but quite a few Americans have Irish heritage so this is a somewhat popular holiday in the US. 

 1980s Philadelphia elementary schools, St. Patrick's Day celebrations were a fun and festive way for students to learn about and celebrate Irish culture and heritage. St. Patrick's Day is a holiday that originated in Ireland and is celebrated on March 17th. It is named after Saint Patrick, who is the patron saint of Ireland. The holiday has since become a celebration of Irish culture and heritage. It is a festival to celebrate the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.

In Philadelphia elementary schools and schools across America, St. Patrick's Day celebrations often included wearing green clothing, decorating the classroom with shamrocks, and participating in festive activities related to Irish culture. Students  also learned about Irish folklore, music, dance, and food, as well as the history and significance of the holiday. We also tried to hunt for the mythical Leprechaun. Leprechauns are very small fairy type of characters that are said to know where gold is. It is also said that if you catch a Leprechaun he will tell you where you can find gold. I have memories of running around outside trying to hunt for a Leprechaun. Unfortunately we never found one. I wonder why??

Overall, St. Patrick's Day celebrations in 1980s Philadelphia elementary schools were a way for students to learn about and appreciate Irish culture while having fun and enjoying the holiday spirit. Unlike Christmas and Halloween I don’t think much has changed related to St. Patrick’s Day. It is just a fun day to wear green, chase after Leprechauns and celebrate with friends and family!

春がやってきました！
3月は多くの英語圏の国で、聖パトリックの祝日という日を祝います。
今日は、僕が小学生の頃、この祝日がどのようなものだったかを少しお話したいと思います。
僕はアメリカのことしかお話できませんが、かなりの数のアメリカ人がアイルランドの伝統を持っているので、
アメリカでもやや人気のある祝日です。

1980年代のフィラデルフィアの小学校では、聖パトリックの祝日のお祝いは楽しく、生徒たちにとって
アイルランドの文化や伝統を学ぶのに良い機会でした。
聖パトリックの祝日はアイルランドに起源があり、3月17日に祝われます。
アイルランドの守護聖人である、聖パトリックにちなんで名づけられました。
それ以来、この祝日はアイルランドの文化と伝統を祝うものになりました。
アイルランドにキリスト教が伝来したことを祝うお祭りです。

フィラデルフィアの小学校やアメリカ中の学校では、聖パトリックの祝日のお祝いは
緑色の服を着たり、教室をシャムロックで飾り付けしたり、アイルランドの文化に関連したお祝いの活動に参加したりしました。
生徒たちはアイルランドの民話や音楽、ダンス、食べ物、そしてこの祝日の歴史や重要性についても学びました。
また、神話のレプラコーンを探したりもしました。
レプラコーンはとても小さな妖精で、金のありかを知っていると言われています。
レプラコーンを捕まえると、金のありかを教えてくれるとも言われています。
レプラコーンを探しに外を走り回った記憶があります。
残念ながら、ひとつも見つかったことがありません。なぜでしょう？

聖パトリックの祝日は、1980年代のフィラデルフィアの小学校では生徒たちにとって
祝日の精神を楽しみながらアイルランドの文化について学び、感謝する機会でした。
クリスマスやハロウィンと違って、聖パトリックに関してはあまり変わっていないように思います。
緑色の服を着て、レプラコーンを追いかけて、友達や家族と一緒にお祝いするのはまさに楽しい日です！
