Hello Everyone!
We hope you had a great holiday and you could recharge your batteries! This year the holiday felt a bit shorter than usual for me. We hope next year will feel a little bit longer!
Today I just wanted to talk a little about January in America, especially my hometown of Philadelphia and New Year’s resolutions. After the New Year holiday not much goes on there, but I thought it might be interesting to give just a little background.
Philadelphia is one of the oldest cities in America but it isn’t among America’s top 5 coldest cities. This isn’t to say that January in Philadelphia isn’t cold. Average local temperatures are in the 30s and 40s Fahrenheit or 0 to 5 degrees celsius. It often gets much colder, or at least it used to when I lived there. It snows regularly in winter but not as heavily as the states further to the north and to the west.
For locals, January is also a time for New Year's resolutions, just as it is in Japan. Many Philadelphians make similar resolutions to Japanese people to improve their physical health by exercising more and eating healthier. This includes setting specific fitness goals, such as running a marathon or losing weight. Another common resolution is to improve their finances by cutting back on expenses and sticking to a budget or paying off debt. Additionally, many people make resolutions to get more organized, whether it's decluttering their homes or simplifying their work schedule.
Another popular resolution is to take up a new hobby, such as learning a new language, or skill, as a way to challenge themselves and improve their careers. Some people also make resolutions to focus on improving their relationships with family, friends, or significant others.
Japanese New Year's traditions often include customs and rituals, such as visiting a temple or shrine to pray for good luck and success in the new year. Americans typically do not go to a shrine, temple or church on this day.
Personally I have never set a new year’s resolution and I probably never will. But I think it is very interesting that very different cultures like Japan and America (for example) have similar customs. Did you all make a New Year’s resolution this year? If so, we know it’s hard but we hope you stick to it!
Good luck and see you next month! Thank you for stopping by!
