Welcome back to our August edition of American life. Today I would just like to talk about how my family (mostly) and other families spend this hot month of summer. 

August is the only month of the year where there are no holidays, or special calendar events. Every other month has something interesting or fun on the calendar. America is a multi-cultural society but it is predominantly Christian, and as such most holidays on the calendar are Christian or National holidays. In Japan we celebrate Obon in August. Obon is a holiday where people pay respect and pray for their ancestors. There is no such widely recognized holiday in the US. I am sure many other countries have similar holidays but in America August is mostly used for vacationing.

Growing up, school started in September (next month.) But gradually over the years, schools across America have been opening from the last week in August. Either way, August remains one of the biggest vacation months of the year for American families. As a child, in August, I remember we would do different things every year, but repeat our favorite activities. During summer holiday we vacationed in the mountains, beach and the state of Maine (near Canada). No matter where we went, summers were always adventurous.

Some years my family would go to the mountains in Northern Pennsylvania for a week and rent a cabin along a lake. There we would go hiking, fishing, boating and swimming in a big river. It was always so fun to go exploring the forest of an unfamiliar area. The weather in the North Eastern part of America where I am from is very hot and humid. In the mountains the air was always much fresher and cooler. We could see wild bears and deer. Once a bear came to our cabin and my father chased it away by banging pots and pans together. It was exciting but scary. No one was hurt. I think the bear was as surprised as we were. Other years we would go to the beach and spend a few days there. My family and I preferred the mountains though. Just as Japanese families, coastal American families like to go on family trips to the beach or Mountains during summer holiday. 

As I grew up we stopped going to the beach as much and started driving to the state of Maine. Maine is very far from Pennsylvania but we would drive anyway. It took 16 to 21 hours to drive depending on how we went and if we made any stops. We would rent cabins with our extended family, aunts, uncles, cousins etc. Maine is famous for lobster so we would all cook lobster in big pots down by the ocean on big rocks. The beaches that are close to Canada are not sandy like other beaches. They are very rocky. The rocks are huge! Once my cousin and I took the boat out at night and we could hear a whale blowing water out of its blowhole but we couldn’t see it because it was dark. We were so scared because we were in a little rowboat. We paddled back to shore as fast as we could. We told our family but no one believed us until many years later.

今日は、この暑い夏の月を、僕の家族や他の家族が
どのように過ごしているかについてお話したいと思います。

8月は、休日や特別な年中行事がない唯一の月です。
他の月は、何かおもしろくて楽しい行事があります。
アメリカは多文化社会ですが、主にキリスト教徒なので
カレンダーのほとんどの休日が、キリスト教に関する祝日や、国民の祝日です。
日本では、8月にお盆があります。
お盆は、人々がご先祖様に敬意を払い、ご先祖様を祈る休日です。
アメリカには、そのような広く認識されている休日はありません。
他の多くの国が似たような休日があると思いますが、
アメリカでは8月は、主に休暇のために使われます。

子どもの頃、学校が始まるのは9月（翌月）でした。
しかし次第に、アメリカ中の学校が8月の最終週から始まるようになっています。
いずれにしても、アメリカの家族にとって8月は
一年で最大の休暇月のひとつです。
子どもの頃、8月には毎年様々なことをしましたが、
好きなあそびは繰り返ししていたことを覚えています。
夏休みの間、僕たちは山やビーチ、メイン州（カナダの近く）で休暇を過ごしていました。
どこへ行っても、夏はいつも冒険でいっぱいでした。

何年かの間、僕の家族はペンシルベニア州北部の山へ一週間行き、湖沿いの小屋を借りました。
そこで、大きな川でハイキングや釣り、ボートに乗ったり、泳いだりしました。
あまり知らない土地の森を探検するのは、いつもとても楽しかったです。
僕の出身地のアメリカ北東部の天気は、とても蒸し暑いです。
山の中では、空気はいつもずっと新鮮で涼しかったです。
野生のクマやシカも見ることができました。
一度、クマが僕たちの小屋の方に来たことがあり、
父が鍋やフライパンを叩いて追い払ってくれたことがあります。
興奮しましたが、怖かったです。
誰もケガはしませんでした。
クマも僕たちと同じくらい驚いたと思います。
他の年には、ビーチに行って、そこで何日か過ごしました。
でも僕も僕の家族も、山の方が好きでした。
日本の家族と同じように、沿岸部のアメリカ人の家族は
夏休みにビーチや山に家族旅行に行くのが好きです。

僕が大きくなると、あまりビーチには行かなくなり、
メイン州に車で行くようになりました。
メイン州はペンシルベニア州からは非常に遠いのですが、とにかく運転しました。
行き方や、停車（休憩）するかどうかにもよりますが、
16時間から21時間ほど運転にかかりました。
僕たちは、おじさんやおばさん、いとこなどの親戚と一緒に小屋を借りました。
メイン州はロブスターで有名なので、海のそばの大きな岩の上の
大きな鍋でロブスターを料理しました。
カナダに近いビーチは、他のビーチのような砂浜ではありません。岩だらけです。
巨大な岩です！
一度、僕といとこが夜にボートを出したのですが、
クジラが噴気孔から水を吹いている音が聞こえました。
でも暗くて見えませんでした。
僕たちは小さな手漕ぎボートに乗っていたので、とても怖かったです。
僕たちはできるだけ早く岸に戻りました。
このことを家族に話しましたが、何年も後まで誰も信じてくれませんでした。
