There are many ways to raise a child from parents of multiple nationalities. Some people say in order to raise a truly bilingual child parents must only speak the foreign language at home. So in my case this would mean that my family would only speak English at home in Japan but Japanese could be spoken outside. Additionally some people say “one parent, one language rule” is the best way to raise a bilingual child. This would mean that my wife would only ever speak Japanese and I would only ever speak English.  Even when we spoke together it would be in different languages. Each method undoubtedly has its own strengths and weaknesses. Our situation, however, is slightly different to both of these examples so I cannot say which way is the best. 

Today I would like to talk about some changes we made at my home concerning how we will raise our daughter. My wife speaks Japanese to me and my daughter. I speak English to my daughter and Japanese to my wife. Because my daughter lives in Japan and will grow up here, her Japanese will one day definitely be stronger and more fluent than her English. This cannot be avoided and it is only natural. I am glad she will be a fluent Japanese speaker. One day she will make fun of my Japanese and accent! But until then we can make the process better and easier for her in a way that helps her retain and understand as much English as possible. 

From this month my wife will continue to speak to our daughter in Japanese as always but will speak to me in English. All conversations between parents will be in English. We will only speak Japanese when our daughter is sleeping or not around. This will be a big change for us. It will be difficult. But we will try to follow this new rule and will report on any progress here in this blog.

多国籍の親が子どもを育てる方法はたくさんあります。
真のバイリンガルの子どもに育てるには、
親は家で外国の言葉だけを話さなければならないと言う人もいます。
これは、僕の家の場合、家の中では英語だけを話し、日本語は外でだけ話すということを意味します。
また、バイリンガルの子どもに育てるには、
「1人の親が1つの言語を話す」ルールが最も良い方法だと言う人もいます。
これは、僕の妻は日本語だけを話し、僕は英語だけを話すということを意味します。
僕たち夫婦が一緒に話すときでさえ、違った言語を話すということです。
どちらの方法にも間違いなく、長所と短所があります。
しかし、僕らの場合はどちらの例とも少し違うので、どちらの方法がベストかは言えません。

今日は、娘の育て方に関して、家で変えたこと・変更点についてお話ししたいと思います。
僕の妻は、僕と娘に日本語で話します。僕は、娘には英語、妻には日本語で話します。
娘は日本で暮らし、育っているので、
娘の日本語を話す力は、いつか確実に英語よりも強くなり、流暢になるでしょう。
これは避けられないことですし、ごく自然なことだと思います。
僕は、娘が流暢に日本語を話せるようになることをうれしく思います。
いつか、娘が僕の日本語やアクセントをからかう日がくるでしょう。
しかしそのときまで、僕たちは、娘ができるだけたくさん英語を理解し、習得できるようになるよう、
より良く、より簡単な手順を作ってあげることができます。

今月から、妻はいつも通り娘に日本語で話し続けますが、僕には英語で話すようにしています。
夫婦の会話全ても英語で話します。
僕らは娘が寝ていたり、近くにいないときだけ、日本語で話します。
これは、僕らにとって大きな変化になるでしょう。
また、難しくもあるでしょう。
しかし、僕らはこの新しいルールに沿ってやってみようと思います。
